The
town was founded in 1840 under the name of La Valeria,
on land donated by Roque Mejia. In 1848, la Camara provincial de antioquia gave its present name in memory of Francisco José
de Caldas sage, martyr of Colombian independence. Since 1988, this
town is home to the diocese of the same name. Caldas was
the birthplace of the poet and playwright Ciro Mendía.
As
a site of interest has the birth of the Medellín river
in the Alto de San Miguel.
The name honors
the Caldas Colombian scientist and patriot Francisco José de Caldas (1768 -
1816) who, in their struggle for national freedom was shot by the royalist army
on October 28, 1816.
